The Schools
What’s in a name?
Due to the large population of Irish settlers, the town was
almost dubbed “Erin”, but a 17 – 13 vote
determined that the town would be named Deerfield, a name
chosen by early settler, John Millen, after his home of Deerfield,
Massachusetts and the area’s large deer population.

In addition to countless pre-schools, nursery schools, Montessori
schools, and Holy Cross Catholic school
(serving grades pre-K-8), Deerfield’s public schools are
among the best in the state, a recognition consistently substantiated
by test scores, college admissions, and graduation rates. Elementary
schools include Kipling, Walden, South Park, and Wilmot, with middle
school students attending Caruso or Shepherd Middle Schools.
Deerfield High School, with an enrollment of 1,800 and an exceptional
average ACT score of 25.6, stands as a model school for academic
excellence and diverse offerings for every student level.
The Parks
Another prominent reason why so many people, especially families,
choose to call Deerfield home is because is maintains one of the
best, most accessible, and most varied park districts. With twenty-one
parks and playgrounds, two public swimming pools, tennis courts,
a public golf course, and a number of playing fields, basketball
courts, and running tracks, and one large community center, Deerfield
residents enjoy plenty of recreational opportunities. The park district
also offers an impressive variety of classes and programs for people
of all ages and, most conveniently, no Deerfield home is more than
a half a mile from a park.
